With the current surge in voter suppression legislation across the country, it is essential that congress pass sweeping federal legislation to protect our right to vote in a fair and accessible electoral process. The For the People Act is the most significant voting rights bill that we have seen in decades and will safeguard voting rights, reduce big money’s influence in our elections, and beat back electoral corruption. This comprehensive package is a bold step to build a more equitable democracy.  We deserve a democracy that works for all our communities; one that can stand up to racist and exclusionary voter suppression tactics. Fighting for environmental and climate justice means fighting for our democracy and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to vote. 

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) is the Chair of the US House of Representatives Democracy Reform Task Force and led the effort to pass the For the People Act in the US House in March of 2021 as it’s chief sponsor.  Congressman Sarbanes has represented Maryland’s 3^rd District since 2007, serving on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Oversight Committee.
