Keep $ Out of Politics

To Our Elected Officials and Fellow NH Citizens:

We believe that our democracy should represent people - not corporations, billionaires, or special interests. Today, the growing influence of money in politics undermines our democratic ideals and gives undue power to wealthy donors and Super PACs, drowning out the voices of everyday Americans.

The 2010 Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision opened the floodgates for unlimited political spending, leading to unprecedented levels of campaign contributions from a small, ultra-rich minority. This has eroded public trust in government, skewed policy priorities, and made our political system more beholden to money than to the will of the people.

We call for comprehensive campaign finance reform, including but not limited to:

  • Pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and affirm that money is not speech, and corporations are not people.

  • Enforce strict limits on campaign contributions and spending; close existing legal loopholes.

  • Ensure full transparency in political spending and require disclosure of all donors.

  • Eliminate Dark Money and ban Pay-to-Play donations from lobbyists and contractors.

  • Implement public financing and small-donor systems to create fair, voter-owned elections.

Democracy thrives when all voices are heard, not just those with the deepest pockets. It’s time to restore integrity to our political system and ensure that elected officials are accountable to the people, not to high-dollar donors.

We urge lawmakers at all levels, local, state, and federal, to take immediate action to get big money out of politics and put voters back at the center of our democracy.

Campaign spending immediately jumped following the Citizens United Decision in 2010. Very few candidates refuse to accept campaign contributions from certain sources. Those candidates are to admired. But it’s difficult to do when the competition takes full measure of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that allows unbridled monies to flow into campaigns – some of which cannot be traced to the original source. A constitutional amendment is required if we are to maintain a Democracy.
