Nov. 7 Pre-Committee-Vote Review of the Special Committee's Maps
The Map-a-Thon Mapping & Technical Team examined the proposals from Democrats and Republicans on the House Special Committee on Redistricting, and compared them to the Map-a-Thon's own maps. All of the Special Committee's maps are constructed using a maximum deviation of 5% above or below the ideal population. Deviation gives mappers some flexibility while observing the "One Person - One Vote" standard from the United States Constitution. While the 10% deviation range is acceptable to the courts, it is important to note that states can ask for exceptions. Map-a-Thon mappers included 15% deviation ranges for some maps for counties that offer particular challenges. Such a change would allow more eligible towns their own House districts and reduce the size of both base districts and floterials.
